Teaching Philosophy
I teach like my life depends on it. Recently I realized after an unexpectedly grueling experience, that my energy springs from the fact that my students almost always meet me half way — “they bring it!” in a very real sense. My job, then, is to create an environment in which they can stretch themselves beyond the limits they may inadvertently set for their intellectual growth. Easier said than done, but I continuously work at it. This often means leaving the four walls of the classroom, and putting Freire’s observation in to practice: “If the structure does not permit dialogue, the structure must be changed.”
